As the price of fuel continue to increase, many bill payers are hoping for divine intervention. Some homeowners however are exploring the installation of the solar panels that will allow them to channel the power of the sun to provide energy for their homes.
When energy prices were low, it was unnecessary to justify the upfront cost of money required to install photovoltaic equipment, solar water heaters and similar equipment. The reason was simple to understand - it would simply take too long to recoup the cost of the equipment in the form of lower energy bills.
But prices are now higher than many of us ever expected. As energy prices continue to go up, the amount of time required to recoup the upfront cost goes down. In addition, a number of state and local tax incentives make it even easier for homeowners to go solar and save money right away.
Photovoltaic systems have also come a long way. The costs of installing solar panels is still high, with a typical two kilowatt installation of OVR Solar solar panels costing around £10,000 / ($20, 000) in most cases, but special tax incentives and long term energy savings can help homeowners recoup those upfront costs faster than ever before.
For example, the Federal government provides homeowners with a tax savings of up to 30% of the cost of a solar unit. This tax savings can help eligible homeowners recoup some of the costs of installing solar panels and solar water heating systems up front, in addition to the energy savings they will enjoy down the road.
Many states also provide special tax incentives for homeowners who install eligible solar panel and solar water heating systems. The specifics of these tax rebates and tax incentives vary from state to state, but many states provide at least some level of tax relief for homeowners who install and use energy efficient systems.
Try running some estimates once you have some figures to see how long it might take for you to break even at today’s fuels prices. However, as the prices for heating oil, gas and other forms of traditional energy continue to soar, the appeal of solar energy will only grow.
Take the first step to energy self sufficiency with OVR Solar.

Grandfather clocks are also known as floor clocks or longcase clocks. In fact, although the first grandfather clocks were made around the mid-1600s, they were not commonly called “grandfather clocks” until after 1875.
What is the history of the grandfather clock?
The true history of grandfather clocks begins back in 1582 when Galileo Galilei first discovered that you could use a pendulum to keep time. It was Galileo, in fact, who drew the first designs for a floor clock. A man named Christiaan Huygens built the first working floor clock by using what Galileo discovered. Of course, it is William Clement who usually gets accredited with the first true grandfather clock.
You might say that William Clement is the “father of grandfather clocks.” The very first clocks did not actually keep time all that well. It was William Clement who helped fix this problem by making the pendulum longer. With a longer pendulum, a floor clock could keep better time. Of course, longer pendulums required longer cases, and this is where the term long case clock came from.
Where did the name “grandfather” clock come from?
The story of the grandfather clock generally goes like this: Once upon a time, in Piercebridge, North Yorkshire, England, there was a lovely lodge known as the George Hotel. Two handsome and loyal bachelor brothers named Jenkins managed the George hotel.
The Jenkins brothers had a beautiful floor clock that stood in the hotel lobby. Hotel guests would often admire the beauty of the clock, and the Jenkins brothers were very proud of it. This particular floor clock kept very good time (which was not terribly usual since the mechanics of long case clocks were still being fixed and improved at the time).
One day, one of the Jenkins brothers died quite suddenly and the old clock started to lose time. Eventually, the old floor clock began to lose an hour a day. When the second brother died, the floor clock stopped working completely. The floor clock was never repaired, and instead it just sat motionless in the hotel lobby.
Around 1875, Henry Work, an American songwriter stayed at the George Hotel while traveling through England. When he asked about the motionless clock, he received the story of the Jenkins brothers. Henry Work decided to write a song about the long case clock. The song lyrics start out, “Oh my grandfather’s clock…”
Nowadays, because of the Jenkins brothers and Henry Work, we refer to long case clocks as grandfather clocks. Grandfather clocks are still very popular in both the United States and England, as well as other countries. They are often cherished heirlooms. After all, why wouldn’t you want to pass on a clock through your family that has such a “family” name like grandfather clock and such a “family” story associated with it about the Jenkins brothers?

Cottage Style decorating can have many variations depending on personal taste, but one thing is certain–comfort, ease of living, and a welcoming feel take priority. The style lends itself well to small spaces, whether you live in a home, condo, or an apartment. My husband and I have decorated all 11 of our dwellings during our 25 years of marriage in several variations of Cottage Style and we have found it to be a flexible and affordable way to create a comforting and welcoming home.
What’s your favorite Cottage Style?
Romantic: Think lots of colorful flowers on everything from upholstery to pictures, plates, and linens. Colors are often soft pastels of pink, peach, green, and rose, but can be more vibrant hues of gold and burgundy and deep green. Antique wooden furniture with soft curves is often mixed in with curvy wrought iron gates and beds. Furniture finishes can be original dark wood, or painted white or a favorite color.
Eclectic: Think artfully arranged collections of the owners, both in furniture and accessories. Treasured items purchased while on vacation, or at flea markets and art fairs are proudly displayed. Favorite colors of the owner are also used. Upon entering this home, it has a sense of “personal style.”
Beachy: Easy-breezy! This one might include lots of white and blue, and maybe a touch of yellow or red. Furniture lines are often simple and a tad rustic in keeping with the casual lifestyle at the beach. Think white slipcovered sofas, blue striped pillows, painted wood floors with sisal rugs, Adirondack chairs, and of course, shells displayed in interesting containers.
Garden: Cottages often blend both indoors and outdoors for a comfortable “garden-y” look. Just do inside what your garden’s doing outside! Think cabbage rose prints on linens, vines and leaves stenciled on a wall, birdhouses and trellis. Textures found in nature include furnishings in wicker, rattan, or twigs.
English: This cottage style is aristocraticthe result of the landed gentry scaling down after changing economic circumstances–a blend of the grand with the inviting. Think large armoires, floral camelback sofas with rolled arms, leather-bound books, and generational family photos. A faded look of age which includes Oriental rugs and tapestry footstools and chair seats is typical.
Shabby Chic: This style was started by Rachel Ashwell. It usually includes lots of white walls with pale pink, green, and robin’s egg blue linens and accessories, quirky old chandeliers with crystals, white loose-fitting slipcovers, distressed painted furniture, with a touch of Old-World French style tossed in for charm.
Modern: Forget the cozy clutter. This one has furniture with modern simple lines but perhaps accented with a touch of softness and favorite colors in the throw pillows or textured throws on the sofa. A few carefully chosen and favorite accessories and art are present, but not overpowering.
Cabin/Camp: If a cozy retreat in the woods is your passion, then this is the Cottage Style for you. Knotty-pine walls and bookcases, berry red and forest green plaid blankets, twig furniture, and Native American artifacts like arrowheads are the hallmark of the camp cottage look.
Vintage: Generational family photos in black and white, lace curtains and tablecloths, family heirloom antique furniture, and aged floral draperies used for upholstery fabric make this Cottage Style. Collections might include old figurines, pottery, handkerchiefs, and jewelry.
French: This style blends tradition with a twist. Graceful curves on some furniture combines with other durable farmhouse furniture for a refined yet rustic look. Colors often include mustard and royal blue. Toile prints on fabrics and wallpaper are popular.
No matter which variation of Cottage Style is your favorite, by artfully arranging your personal things, you’ll be on your way to your very own cozy, comfy Cottage Style home.

Living in the modern world, showers have become more of a luxury compared to the ancient days in Greece where pull cord showers were taken outside and only a cold water supply was available due to lack of plumbing. More than a welcomed change occurred towards the latter part of the 80’s and into the early the 90’s when new technologies were introduced into the bathroom remodeling industry where bathroom suppliers saw a splurge in shower and bath sales, indicating more homeowners were looking to upscale their bathrooms.
Shower enclosures were popularized in part of the design boom with bathroom suppliers exhibiting sleek trendy designs. Not before long homeowners were demolishing their existing bathrooms down to the bare walls, thus creating an increase in demand for home contractors and renovation firms brought on by the bathroom design frenzy. The emergence of shower enclosures became a key point of interest as it gave way to opening up a bathroom where the shower no longer had to be attached to the bath and only required additional plumbing be installed in order to accommodate the placement of the shower enclosure.
Today’s remodelers are going big and going all out when it comes to redesigning their bathrooms since there are far more design concepts available especially for the smaller bathroom. Typically the average size of a bathroom is approximately 130-140sq ft, according to the National Interior Design Council when the new market trends came into play, homeowners looked to shower enclosures as a means to give bathrooms a more spacious appeal. A pivotal factor in helping revolutionize the shower industry was due in part to homeowners moving towards replacing single showers with two-person showers and eliminating adjoined bath/shower units.
The desire for homeowners to express their individual design flare is largely expressed in the increased number of sales in relation to shower enclosures where people are looking to go beyond the traditional sliding glass door shower or shower certain. Since shower enclosures have undergone a tremendous change in the past several years, people are quickly discovering frameless shower doors and enclosures are all the rage and that taking a relaxing shower in one of these elegant easy-to-clean shower enclosures is an oasis of sheer pleasure.
Staying with the trend towards openness and airy spaces, the eminent range of shower enclosure designs add a stunning appeal to any bathroom remodeling project, from frameless quadrant shower enclosures for an ultra modern look or uniquely designed frosted glass corner shower enclosure adorned in chrome or stainless steel. The dazzling spectacle of shower enclosure designs directly lends to the success of the bathroom and shower industry and has often been reported at times difficult for bathroom suppliers to keep supply in stock, indicating there is supply in demand and is on a steady upward climb. According to interior designers with more homes being built, people are customizing their bathrooms prior to completion to incorporate the latest trends in bathroom d©cor with shower enclosures leading the way not only because of their timeless elegance, but are easily maintained and with everyone leading lifestyles that is an added bonus.

If you are thinking of purchasing a down comforter to keep you toasty warm this winter, there are a few things you need to know before you make your purchase.
First of all, if you’re confused about what a down comforter is, let me explain. The “down” filling in a down comforter is the feathers from geese or ducks. Down is a highly desirable stuffing for a comforter because it is very light, holds in body heat while also allowing moisture to escape, and is very soft.
If you are allergic to goose or duck feathers, you may still be able to own a down comforter. Look for a comforter that has down that has been purified, ideally purified several times. The purification process removes the dust and dirt from the down which is what typically bothers most allergy sufferers. But if real down isn’t for you, there are some very good synthetic comforters on the market that do a fairly good job of mimicking the fluffiness and softness of a down comforter.
“Fill power” is a term you need to become familiar with if you are purchasing a down comforter. Fill power directly relates to the amount of warmth you will get from a down comforter and is also an indicator of the quality of the down.
One ounce of down with a fill power of 650 means this: one ounce of that down takes up 650 cubic inches. A down comforter with a fill power of 350 means that once ounce of that down takes up 350 cubic inches. The higher the fill power, the higher the quality of the down and the more warmth it provides. Also, the higher the fill power the more warmth you get with less weight. So higher fill power means more warmth, and more fluffiness while also having a comforter that is lightweight.
You don’t necessarily need a high fill power though. It depends on how much warmth you want. If you live in a cold area a high fill power comforter is nice to have in the winter. A lower fill power comforter is nice in the summer or if you live in an area with a warm climate. But I’ve found that the 550 down comforter I own is comfortable in both the summer and the winter. And I live in a cooler climate.
You want the down comforter you purchase to having baffling. Baffling holds the down stuffing in place in the comforter and prevents it from shifting around. My first down comforter didn’t have fully sealed baffles. The filling shifted and I ended up with a comforter that was thin on one side and extra thick on the other. To find a down a down comforter that won’t have filling that shifts look for either baffling where the baffles are sewn through all the way or a comforter that has closed baffles or end-to-end baffles. If a comforter has closed baffles or end-to-end baffles the package will usually clearly state it.
To keep your down comforter clean, cover it with a duvet cover. A duvet cover is like a cocoon for your comforter. Besides keeping your down comforter cleaner longer, a duvet cover offers you color and decorating options.
When looking at duvet covers and some down comforters you may also notice the term “thread count” being mentioned frequently. Generally speaking, the higher the thread count, the softer and more luxurious the fabric.
Owning a down comforter is a great little luxury. You don’t have to buy the most expensive down comforter to get a great quality product either. And if you take care of your comforter it can last for a long time, making it a good investment.

Beyond Tradition: the Hardwood Flooring Advantage
Hardwood flooring is looked upon by many as the flooring option that lends a sense of permanence to an interior. Whether it’s a residential interior, or an office installation, hardwood flooring adds an air of class, as well as structural strength. For these reasons, hardwood flooring remains to be a classic choice. It is a flooring option that has the advantage of tradition behind it; many cultures and civilizations have used hardwood flooring, and have done so for centuries. But, there are reasons beyond those of tradition that make hardwood flooring a practical and decorative choice.
One of the most attractive attributes of hardwood flooring is the range of options open to you in terms of finish, surface, stain, and species. All of these aspects play a very important role in determining the look of your flooring. With all of these choices, hardwood flooring is known to make for a unique effect in each interior. To this point, an advantage you will experience will most likely be all of the compliments you’ll get because of your hardwood flooring for years to come.
Pre-finished and Unfinished Hardwood Flooring
Hardwood flooring can be purchased in either prefinished or unfinished varieties and there are distinct advantages in both. For pre-finished hardwood flooring, the obvious advantage is that of convenience. No sanding is required for these types of hardwood floors, and therefore more time is saved on preparation as well a mess; sanding a hardwood floor involves both. Also, no time must be allowed for the finish on your hardwood flooring to dry, a period which can take a half a day to longer, depending on the kind of finish you use.
As far as unfinished hardwood flooring goes, the most compelling advantage is that of a more uniform seal. This is the reason why many professionals offer unfinished hardwood flooring to clients; it is easier to make sure that all of the minute gaps between the hardwood flooring boards are sealed when finish is applied on the whole surface of the flooring, and not on a board-by-board basis. This means extra protection against moisture, the hardwood floor’s most dangerous enemy. In this sense, all of the preparation and mess is worth the effort.
Hardwood Flooring Surfaces and Stains
The diversity of hardwood flooring extends not only to finish, but also in the range of surfaces and choices in stain available to the customer. Some hardwood flooring is planed evenly at the mill, offering a smooth, refined surface that many consumers have come to admire in hardwood flooring. But another variety of hardwood flooring that is becoming popular with flooring professionals and homeowners is that of the handscraped hardwood flooring. In this case, the hardwood plank is actually worked by hand to create a contoured, seasoned surface that gives the hardwood flooring a more rustic, lived-in appearance.
The variations in hardwood flooring are further extended by the variety of stains available as well. Some stains serve to bring out the natural range of color in a chosen species. Others effectively change the color altogether, allowing a consumer to enjoy the benefits offered by one species, while enjoying the color of another. Hardwood flooring is probably one of the more flexible choices with regard to appearance and personal taste.
Hardwood Flooring: the Luxury of Choice
Overall, hardwood flooring is not just an option which relies upon tradition, although hardwood flooring has been relied upon for centuries because it is such a durable material. What hardwood flooring offers is the luxury of choice and an ease of integration into an interior design. Along with the advantages of appearance, hardwood is and continues to be a choice in flooring that can add structural strength to a residence or office.
Popular Species of Hardwood Flooring
Red and White Oak - These species are naturally pale in color, with hints of pink running through the Red Oak. Both are known for their utility across all kinds of applications. White Oak is known to be slightly harder than red oak, although red oak in turn is slightly easier to saw and nail.
American Cherry - Used for cabinet making as well as flooring, American Cherry is known to be an attractive species that is very easy to work with. It is not as hard as either red or white oak, but offers a greater tonal range of color that darkens over time to become even more rich in tone, due to photosensitivity.
Hard Maple - Harder still than oak, the uniform texture of maple as well as its naturally abrasion-resistant surface makes it an excellent choice for hardwood flooring. Early North American settlers relied upon maple for its hardy nature, and it continues to be popular today.
Brazilian Cherry AKA Jatoba - One of most notable features of this exotic species is its color - a rich, reddish brown that eventually ages into a lustrous burgundy. Another important as aspect of Jataba is how hard it is; it is harder than some species of mahogany. So for look as well as durability, Brazilian Cherry excels.
Hardwood flooring “Dos” and “Don’ts”
Do:
Choose a species of hardwood which will stand up to the type of foot traffic you expect in the area you wish to have it installed
Consult the terms and conditions of your purchase, including warranty information
Hire a professional installer if you have little or no experience in installing a hardwood floor. Hiring a professional flooring contractor will spare you the costly mistakes that often characterize installations by the inexperienced
In the case of an unfinished hardwood flooring option, consult with contractors or local retailers about which finish or stain is most appropriate for your choice of hardwood flooring
Choose an appropriate moisture barrier to rest between subfloor and hardwood flooring in order to add another level of protection
Expect color variations, as hardwood is a natural material. This can be to your advantage in terms of design. Open all boxes to view the tonal range in your particular batch and lay out the boards accordingly to suit your personal style
Allow your hardwood flooring to “acclimate” before you install it. This means opening the boxes of flooring to expose it to the temperature of the area where it is to be installed. Being a natural material, hardwood flooring expands and contracts according to climate
Use DRY mops and vacuums to keep your new hardwood flooring clear of dirt and dust
See to your pets - clip their nails, buy water dishes with a wide base to avoid spills, use area rugs or runners in higher pet traffic areas, and look out for “number one” (clean up those “accidents” as soon as they happen!)
Don’t:
Install hardwood flooring in an area that will be subject to excessive moisture. This also means avoiding an installation “below grade” (in a basement for instance) or in bathrooms
Install hardwood flooring in an area that is not environmentally controlled all year long - say, in a cottage or summer home that is not constantly maintained
Use wax-based cleaners or harsh detergents that will dull the finish of the hardwood flooring
Use steel wool or any other abrasives to clean a hardwood floor
Use excessive water when cleaning a hardwood floor
Walk on your hardwood flooring with athletic spikes or high-heels
Install hardwood flooring over radiant heat. For this, it is best to consider engineered hardwood flooring which is designed to allow for the temperature variations resulting from radiant heat
Leave damp rugs on the surface of hardwood flooring for an extended period.
For a more comprehensive list of dos and don’ts, and for more details in general, it’s always best to talk to the professionals directly. Contractors and sales reps that specialize in hardwood flooring can often serve as excellent resources before, during, and after your hardwood flooring purchase.
